Web slings for lifting
Polyester web slings are light, soft on the load and easy to handle. Use them for machinery, painted or finished parts where a scratch means rework.

Wire rope, polyester or chain: which sling?
| Particulars | Wire rope slings | Polyester web or round slings | Alloy chain slings (G80 / G100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Structural steel, pipes, outdoor rigging | Machined, painted, precast concrete and delicate loads | Foundries, sharp plates, rough and hot loads |
| Handling | Stiff and heavy. Broken wires can form sharp burrs. | Light, flexible, soft on hands | Heavy to carry. Flexible link by link |
| Weak point | Kinking, crushing, core rust | Sharp edges and heat | Resists cuts and crushing. Easiest to inspect |
| Heat | Up to about 200°C (steel core) | Up to 100°C as rated by the manufacturer | Up to 200°C with no capacity reduction |
| Repair | Not repairable once kinked or crushed | Not repairable if cut, torn or burnt | Damaged links and hooks can be replaced |
Choose polyester when
You are lifting machinery, stainless tanks, painted structures or valves. Rule: never run a polyester sling over a sharp edge without a corner protector. A 90-degree steel corner will cut it under load.
Choose wire rope when
You are handling structural steel, pipes and heavy loads in outdoor yards and need strength at a reasonable price. Rule: retire the sling at the first kink or bird-cage.
Choose alloy chain when
You work in foundries, forging shops or hot mills, or lift one plate and catch with sharp corners. Rule: only Grade 100, 10T or 120 chain for overhead lifting. Never transport or hardware chain.
Watch the sling angle
The flatter the sling, the more load each leg carries. A 2 tonne load on two legs at 60 degrees puts about 1.15 tonnes on each leg. At 30 degrees, each leg carries 1.15 tonnes. Keep the angle between the sling leg and the load at 60 degrees or more. If the pick points are wide, use a longer sling or a spreader beam.
| Sling angle to horizontal | Capacity factor | 10 tonne sling pair can lift |
|---|---|---|
| 60° (recommended) | 0.866 | 8.66 tonne |
| 45° (acceptable) | 0.707 | 7.07 tonne |
| 30° (avoid) | 0.500 | 5.00 tonne |

When to take a sling out of service
Polyester slings
- Missing or unreadable capacity tag
- Core yarns visible through the cover
- Melt spots, burns or chemical burns
- Cuts along the edge or the stitching
Wire rope slings
- Kinks, crushing or bird-caging
- Broken wires in one rope lay, or 5 in one strand
- Strand in one rope lay
- Heat damage or severe corrosion
- Cracked or deformed end fittings
Chain slings
- Stretched links that do not move freely
- Cracks, nicks or gouges in links
- Hook throat opened more than 5%
- Hook opening more than the manufacturer's limit
- Heat damage or weld spatter
If a sling shows any of these at the morning check, take it out of service. If the tag is missing, cut the eye and scrap it.

Lifting sling questions
Which lifting slings should I use for machined or painted parts? ⌄
Polyester web slings are generally suitable for machined or painted surfaces because they are soft and help reduce the risk of scratching delicate surfaces. Always use suitable edge protection where sharp edges are present.
How often should lifting slings be inspected? ⌄
Lifting slings should be checked before use and inspected regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions and your site's lifting procedures. Any sling showing damage, excessive wear or a missing identification tag should be removed from service.
Can I shorten a sling by tying a knot? ⌄
No. Do not shorten lifting slings by tying knots. Use an appropriate sling configuration, shortening device or lifting accessory designed for the application.
Do you supply wire rope as well as slings? ⌄
Yes. Wire rope products and lifting accessories can be supplied depending on the required specification, construction, length and application.
